History
I want people to enjoy the charm of tatami in their daily lives
"Tatamiya Tatsuzo Sugimoto was founded in Kyoto in 1927.
For almost 100 years and four generations, we have been developing, manufacturing, and selling tatami products.
In 2014, we decided to name our shop “Tatamiya Tatsuzo” with the determination to carry on the tatami-making skills and spirit of our founder, Tatsuzo Sugimoto.
Our concept is “to make tatami that make life more comfortable”.
Through tatami, we hope to bring “comfort” and “relaxation” to your daily life.
When I was thinking about how I could utilize the taste of tatami in products close to our daily lives, I came across Kakegawa-ori in Yanagawa City, Fukuoka Prefecture, on a trip.
We wanted to make products using the colorful Kakegawa weaving.
We immediately contacted the producer, Mr. Shimamatsu, and the development of Tatami coasters began.
The resulting tatami coasters are now sold in Miyazu City, our hometown, as well as overseas.
We will continue to work hard to convey the charm of tatami to as many people as possible."
Characteristic
Domestic rush grass with vivid patterns crafted for the table
"Of the tatami mats currently in circulation in Japan, the proportion of domestically produced tatami mats is approximately 10%.
However, we are committed to domestic production, which accounts for 90% of the materials we use.
The tatami we use in our coasters and luncheon mats is Kakegawa-ori domestic tatami.
Kakegawa-ori is a traditional weaving technique from the Chikugo region of Fukuoka Prefecture, and is used for tatami mats and goza (straw mats).
The coasters and luncheon mats we produce are woven from brightly coloured natural rush and are characterized by their individuality and harmony with the living space.
The edges are trimmed by hand during the production process, making use of the skills of traditional tatami craftsmen."
For Customers
We Want People to Feel the Charm of Tatami at the Dinner Table
As a tatami manufacturer that has been in business for over 100 years, we wanted to reintroduce everyone to the wonders of tatami, which is why we created tatami coasters and luncheon mats using domestically produced tatami.
Tatami has excellent moisture absorption and humidity control functions, making it perfect for these products.
We hope you will enjoy them together with the natural aroma of rush grass and the unique elasticity and feel of tatami.
We hope the colorful patterns make you feel festive.
Tatami has been part of Japan's unique culture since ancient times, so we hope to share this culture with people overseas.
Tatami has long been used in Japanese living spaces and is taken for granted in Japan, so its charm is often overlooked.
We hope that our customers can rediscover the charm of tatami through the products we offer.
