History
Discover the new charm of decorative paper
Yushima Art was established by Kichitaro Isshiki in 1897 in Yushima, Tokyo.
Traditional techniques such as gold and silver leaf and powder, mica brushwork, and woodblock printing have been nurtured in the Edo culture.
These techniques are used to create designs on Japanese paper.
The first generation had many interactions with the master of Japanese-style painting, Yokoyama Taikan, and other teachers in the art world, and passed on their craftsmanship and rich sensibility to their own children.
Thanks to them, the second generation was certified as a Tokyo Metropolitan Traditional Craftsman and I, the third generation, was certified as a traditional craftsman designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and opened a workshop for craftsmen who design and decorate fusuma paper.
Although we were once pushed back by the wave of machine printing, there is once again a demand for fusuma paper made using traditional methods.
I named the process of adding traditional designs and decorations to washi paper with gold and silver foil or powder as "decoration technique.
I continue to take on the challenge of developing new product designs while respecting the techniques and sensitivities I have inherited.
