Shigeo Toyokawa

Makiri means "small sword" in the Ainu language.

It is a tool that both men and women always carried on their person, and the handle is engraved with the marks of their ancestors.

The Ainu wood carving was passed down from the paternal lineage as a men's craft.

The artist, the late Shigeo Toyokawa, worked for many years on the restoration and production of traditional Ainu wood carvings, contributing greatly to the transmission and preservation of Ainu culture.

Some of his works are on display at the University of British Columbia and the National Museum of Ethnology in Canada.
