a “toma” is a type of traditional Ainu mat
It acts like a sheet or tarp and comes in various sizes, from a small indoor rug to a large one that can be spread out in the garden for farm work.
This piece is a cattail reed rug woven with traditional Ainu patterns and is large enough to be used as a luncheon mat or table centerpiece.
Influenced by her parents, the artist became interested in traditional Ainu crafts at an early age and learned wood carving, weaving, and embroidery techniques.
Currently, she is working to promote Ainu culture by creating products with new arrangements based on traditional techniques.
They are perfect for daily use or as gifts.
