Shinobu Sugimura
Familiarize yourself with outstanding Ainu wood carving techniques.
Tumsi is an Ainu chain carving.
Originally tumsi were given to babies as a rattle, and when it eventually would be broken by vigorous use, the Ainu were happy to know that the baby had grown up.
The straps are made from onko (yew) wood, which is hard and has a beautiful grain.
There are 20 different combinations of strings and beads to hang the tumsi from, and you can choose your favorite color.
The artist has added her own twist to the technique, learned from watching her mother carve when she was a child and which she hopes to pass on to as many people as possible.
They are perfect for hanging on a bag, attaching to keys, or as a gift!
